A MUST KNOW brief info about Sagada!

Sagada is a 5th class municipality in the province of Mountain Province, Philippines. It is located 275 km. north of Manila, sagada tour - bit.ly/lovekosagada 140 km. from Baguio, and it is adjacent to Bontoc, the provincial capital.

In the early 1970’s, only a few tourists mainly missionaries and the more adventurous, young and energetic, curious and Hippie styled Filipinos from the lowlands visit Sagada. It was in 1980’s when tourism boomed when a phenomenal number of Europeans flocked to this mountain hideaway. Soon enough people got used to the presence of tourists visiting the town.

It has been said according to history that the name Sagada came about when a group of Spanish soldiers (back in a day) coming from Besao met a man near Danum Lake who was carrying a bamboo basket for catching fish. The soldiers asked the man what the name of the next place was. Thinking that they were asking what he was carrying, the man answered, “sagada.” From then on the settlement of Biag went down on Spanish records as Sagada.

Needless to say though that  Sagdaians’ are sturdy and industrious. It is interesting to know that the People of Sagada are Malays and speak a language called Kankana-ey. Generally referred to as Igorots

Sagada is famous for its “hanging coffins”. This is a traditional way of burying people that is still utilized. Not everyone is qualified to be buried this way. You can view some of the photos taken in our Sagada Pictures page.

Popular activities include trekking, exploring caves and waterfalls, spelunking, bonfires, picnics, rappelling, visiting historical sites, nature hikes, and participating in tribal celebrations.
